VES Choir Honors Veterans Through Music and Meaning
Vilseck, Germany — Students at Vilseck Elementary School turned music into a message of gratitude during their annual Veterans Day concert, held under the direction of music teacher and choir leader Ms. Alex Luke.
The performance, centered on the theme of “Choices,” honored the decisions made by veterans who chose to serve their country. From the opening presentation of the colors by the high school JROTC to the student-led national anthem, narration and emcee duties, the event showcased student leadership and respect for the military community.
“Performance is a new type of reward for many students at the elementary level,” Luke said. “In VES Choir, we learn about different types of performance, such as playing instruments or singing for entertainment or in service of others. As an act of service, we celebrate those nearest and dearest to us with a concert each November for Veterans Day.”
Guest speakers Lt. Col Steven Huckleberry and Staff Sgt. Ret. Daryl Appling shared personal reflections from their military service, inspiring students and families to reflect on the courage and sacrifice of veterans past and present.
“It was wonderful to witness the students’ hard work and Ms. Luke’s dedication. A truly special Veterans Day performance,” said fifth-grade teacher Ms. Rosa Coss.
Second-grade teacher Ms. Toni Kellar added, “The concert was patriotic and heartwarming — tiny voices, big hearts, honoring heroes with every note.”
As the final song ended and applause filled the auditorium, one message resonated clearly: the students of Vilseck Elementary understand that performing can be more than entertainment — it can be an act of service.
