Vilseck Elementary celebrates Month of the Military Child
There is a reason the dandelion was chosen as the symbol of the military child. Resilient by nature, the dandelion thrives in every climate, on every continent, in every season. When mowed down, it simply grows a shorter stalk and blooms again. It does not wait for perfect conditions. It does not need them. It just grows — and in growing, it spreads seeds of strength wherever the wind carries it.
Our military-connected children have moved across oceans, changed schools mid-year, said goodbye to parents in uniform, and still — they show up. They connect. They bloom. This April, VES celebrated Month of the Military Child in a way that honored exactly that spirit, made possible through the dedication of our first-grade teachers, Dr. Prater and Ms. Van Winkle, and the extraordinary partnership of the 2d Cavalry Regiment.
The month came to life through a full calendar of meaningful experiences. It opened on April 7, 2026 with a Clap In, welcoming students into a month dedicated entirely to them. Purple Up days filled the hallways with color and pride. The highlight of the month, the moment students and staff will carry with them long after April ends, was the Static Display and Military Rotations. Soldiers from the 2d Cavalry Regiment brought six military vehicles onto campus and opened their world to VES Lions. Students analyzed MREs, learned to march in formation, practiced hand signals, packed a ruck, tested their memory through KIMS, and explored military medical procedures. They were participants, and the smiles said it all.
Dr. Prater, who helped bring the rotations to life, captured the heart of the moment beautifully — and she speaks from experience. As a military spouse and parent of a military child herself, she reflected, "Month of the Military Child, for me, is about celebrating strength, resilience, and the pride our kids have in being part of something bigger than themselves. When our students see soldiers in action, they're not just watching, they're connecting. They see their parents, their families, and their own story reflected in that uniform. That pride is something truly special."
Ms. Van Winkle brought that same depth of heart to the work. As a mother of three and a teacher to many military-connected students, she shared, "Military-connected children will always have a very special part of my heart. I am so thankful that we were able to showcase and support our dandeLIONS this month."
DandeLIONS. It is the perfect word — part dandelion, part Lion — and it captures exactly who our students are. Resilient enough to take root anywhere. Brave enough to bloom in every new place they are planted. And fierce enough to carry their pride with them wherever they go.
The month closed with a spring concert and dinner, beautifully brought to life by Ms. Luke, whose dedication to her students and her craft fills every performance with heart. It was a joyful celebration of community. Our dandeLIONS do not just survive. They thrive.
