Vilseck Elementary School celebrates the Presidential Fitness Test with community and heart
VILSECK, Germany – At Vilseck Elementary School (VES), the DoWEA Presidential Fitness Test (PFT) was never going to be just another item on the end-of-year checklist. When the national launch of the PFT was announced, VES was ready — and when the day arrived, it became something far greater than a fitness assessment. It became a celebration of movement, community, and the belief that every student can do hard things.
Led by PE teacher Ms. Janne, students across VES took on the mile run, planks, and push-ups in an environment built on encouragement, growth mindset, and genuine joy. Ms. Janne's intentional use of positive, strengths-based language set the tone from the very first step, reminding students that showing up and pushing through— not perfection— is the goal. Some students ran the entire mile without stopping. Others walked with purpose, as Ms. Janne put it, or found their own rhythm in a walk-run combination. What mattered was that every single Lion crossed the finish line. And when they did, a cold water-bottle was waiting — a small but meaningful gesture that said, you did it, and you earned it.
What made this day truly special, however, was not just what students accomplished individually — it was how they showed up for each other. Students cheered, encouraged, and motivated their peers to keep going, demonstrating a level of heart and character that went well beyond any fitness metric. As a principal who is deeply energized by movement and the power it has to build confidence and community, witnessing that peer motivation in action was one of the proudest moments of the school year.
VES did not celebrate this milestone alone. Our unit partner, The Field Artillery Squadron of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment joined us on the field, bringing with them the spirit of service, strength, and teamwork that defines the military community we are so honored to serve. Parent volunteers also came out in force, lending their energy and encouragement to students and deepening the community bonds that make VES more than a school — they make it a family. Their presence sent a powerful message to every child: we see you, we believe in you, and we are here.
The Presidential Fitness Test asked our students to dig deep. And they did — not because they had to, but because they had a community standing right beside them. That is the magic of Vilseck Elementary School.
