Vilseck Elementary School Hosts First Annual Camp Read-A-Lot: A Family Literacy Night
VILSECK, Germany – Vilseck Elementary School recently transformed a rainy evening into a memorable literacy celebration during its Camp Read‑A‑Lot: A Family Literacy Night. Although originally planned for an outdoor setting, staff, volunteers, and community partners seamlessly shifted the event indoors, filling the school’s cafeteria and annex with the spirit of camping, reading, and family engagement.
Hosted by the Information Center as part of ongoing efforts to bring literacy experiences beyond the classroom, the event featured a read aloud tent, a Book Hike, themed learning stations, and student engagement activities supported by numerous partners. Scouting America added to the atmosphere by setting up tents indoors, giving students a fun and imaginative place to read and explore.
“Seeing our families come together by sharing stories, playing literacy games, and turning a rainy day into an adventure, was great,” said Ms. Vivian Bouza, Library Information Specialist. “Camp Read‑A‑Lot brought literacy to life in such a tangible way, and it was wonderful to watch students and parents build memories around books.”
This event was made possible through outstanding support from a wide network of partners, including: 2nd Cavalry Regiment, MWR Library, BOSS (Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers), DES/Military Police, the Environmental Division, the American Red Cross, Army Community Service, Service Credit Union, USO, Scouting America, Vilseck High School's JROTC, AFN Bavaria, and the Vilseck Commissary.
Camp Read‑A‑Lot demonstrated the power of collaboration between DoWEA schools, military units, installation services, and parent organizations, all working together to cultivate a love of reading and strengthen family connections.
Vilseck Elementary School is proud of its students, grateful for its partners, and excited for future opportunities to celebrate literacy as a community.
