Throughout the month of April, first grade teachers Ms. VanWinkle and Dr. Prater of Vilseck Elementary School coordinated a variety of events to celebrate the Month of the Military Child. Their efforts brought together students, families, and service members in a heartfelt tribute to the unique experiences of military-connected children.

Inspiration Behind the Celebration

Both Ms. VanWinkle and Dr. Prater were personally inspired to host these events by their strong ties to the military community. Ms. VanWinkle, whose husband is a retired service member, is the proud parent of three military children. Dr. Prater, whose husband is currently active duty, also has one military child. Their personal experiences gave them a deep appreciation for the challenges and resilience of military families. With many Vilseck Elementary students having parents who serve with the regiment, the teachers were committed to creating a meaningful and inclusive celebration that reflected their students' experiences and strengthened the school’s community ties.

Memorable Moments from the Events

One of the most memorable moments, as shared by Ms. VanWinkle, was the Static Display event. Students had the opportunity to interact with six military vehicles — including two Strykers, a howitzer, a wrecker, updated JLTVs, and an excavator — brought in from six different squadrons of the 2CR regiment. Students explored the vehicles up close and engaged with the soldiers, asking questions and learning about military operations firsthand.

Dr. Prater highlighted the "Life in the Military" rotation as another standout experience. During this event, active-duty service members led engaging stations where students learned hand signals, packed rucksacks, read military orders, practiced combat lifesaving techniques, and explored land navigation. To add an extra layer of authenticity, LTC Huckleberry, Field Artillery Squadron Commander, graciously signed official-looking "orders" for the students to carry during the activities, making the experience even more realistic and exciting for them.

Building Awareness and Community Support

The month-long celebration kicked off with a Clap-In, where families and staff came together to welcome and honor students. This event symbolized the school community’s unified support for military-connected children. The participation of the regiment, who dedicated both time and resources, highlighted the value placed on students and their families — including the civilian children who play vital roles in supporting military families.

Special thanks were given to Colonel Flanagan, who took time from his busy schedule to read to the students and demonstrate exceptional leadership, and to Lieutenant Weiner, whose support helped coordinate the regiment's involvement.

Reflecting on the month’s activities, Ms. VanWinkle and Dr. Prater shared how rewarding it was to celebrate their students throughout April. The events honored the sacrifices and resilience of military children, strengthened the bond between the school and military community, and created lasting memories for everyone involved. The service members thoroughly enjoyed participating, and the students left with a deeper appreciation for the military experiences that shape their lives.
