At Vilseck Elementary School, Information Specialist Ms. Vivian Bouza is transforming how students engage with libraries by integrating Minecraft Education into the Information Center. In this innovative project, 4th and 5th graders were tasked with designing and building virtual libraries in response to the question: “What makes a library special or unique compared to other spaces?”
Students collaborated to select virtual worlds and worked together to create libraries with essential features such as bookshelves, reading areas, tables, cozy corners, computers, and “special collections” rooms. Their creativity flourished, with designs that included rooftop terraces, water features, cafés, and even original book excerpts.
“This project allowed students to reimagine libraries in ways that reflect their interests an
d needs while building essential collaboration and problem-solving skills,” said Ms. Bouza.
Aligned with AASL Standards, the activity promoted inquiry, inclusivity, collaboration, creativity, curation, and digital responsibility. Through Minecraft, students developed STEM and literacy skills while gaining a deeper appreciation for how libraries connect communities, spark imagination, and support lifelong learning—in both the real and virtual worlds.
